WOODHAWK (Calgary Riff Rock)
From the foot of the majestic Rocky Mountains comes Calgary, Alberta’s Woodhawk. Masters of straight ahead riff-rock wizardry, the power trio released an EP in 2014 and have continued forging ahead. With time travel tested themes of science fiction, swords and sorcery, the band’s lyrics are born from snowy winters, hot practice spaces and pages of dog eared paperbacks. While the musicianship reinforces recollections of Black Sabbath, modern influences that have helped you smash air drums or highway speed limits are undeniably present. In their brief existence, Guitarist Turner Midzain, bassist Mike Badmington and drummer Kevin Nelson have taken the stage at The Commodore Ballroom, as well as landed slots supporting Airbourne, Elder and The Shrine. Their latest record Beyond The Sun, recorded by Jesse Gander at Rain City Recorders, landed them on numerous 2017 Best Of lists and on record players around the world.
MOUNTAIN DUST (Mtl ROCK)
Whether it be defined as Stoner Soul, Blues Metal, or Western Doom, Mountain Dust’s sound remains strongly rooted in the rock styles that emerged in the late 1960s/early ‘70s, even as they work toward their third full-length (expected release: 2020).
With German boutique label Kozmik Artifactz behind them, the Montreal formation have received worldwide attention and support for their previous releases, Nine Years (2016) and Seven Storms (2018), helping secure their place as regulars of the international hard rock festival circuit with appearances at the 2018 editions of Germany’s Freak Valley and Sweden’s Muskelrock during an extensive tour of Europe, and a performance at Heavy Montreal 2019.
