Tribute to Ian Showalter

Ska Jeff remembers Ian though his bands and the many audio projects he engineers, mixed and or mastered. Some great stuff!

M-1 - 121 IAN’s Post High School Industrial Post Punk Cassette

After high school, Ian self-released the cassette album 121 as M-1, influenced by industrial and post-punk bands like Ministry, Killing Joke, the Cure, NIN. The tape was sold at Shake Records and other downtown indie record stores. Following that release, Ian continued to record, with a series of tracks, led by “Raw Power”, that went mostly unreleased as Ian became more interested in hardcore techno.

Listening to this, I'm back there, sitting in on the recording sessions, clubbing with Ian at the Iguana, Gigi's and Zinc, the Pixies and Foufounes Electriques in Montreal, the Cure at Landsdowne Park. Good times. - PAUL SPENDLOVE

DIGITAL YOUTH NOW - Ian’s Hardcore Techno Cassette

In 1992, Ian released the cassette album “D.Y.N. - DIGITAL YOUTH NOW”, influenced by the hardcore techno of the day. This includes three of his M-1 tracks, with a new version of “Technophobia” and a name change of “8100 Noise” to “8300n”, though the track is the same.

At this time, Ian was immersed in the Ottawa rave scene and also spun house music as a regular DJ at Le Club in Hull and, later, at the Lookout Bar in the Byward Market. - PS

LAB RATS 1998

Ian recorded Lab Rats in 1998 when we were roommates. These tracks were never released, but they are some of my favourite tracks of his, showing a lot of inventiveness and the evolution of his recording skills. The voice is sampled from a space documentary on a flexidisc. Unfortunately I don't have the full version of the last track. Enjoy. - PS

THE DAGGER EYES - Daggerized - Music Video

Ian’s killer punk band during the 2010’s - such amazing and creative vocal delivery!

SUPPOSITORIES - Auxiliary (Sewer Love?)

Aug 23, 2009 live in Wakefield

THE DAGGER EYES - From the album Reapers - 2013

The Dagger Eyes are David (drums), Ian (vocals/bass) and Ilona (guitar), ex‑members of Suppositories (Ottawa) and Dirty Tricks (Montreal), a new Montreal/Ottawa-based punk trio that slays your ears with each stab. They deliver an in‑your-face mega-catchy mix of '77 punk and post-punk, with vocals many hardcore punks could only dream of.
